Leadership Lessons From Jiu JItsu https://emmett.website/?p=7480 Fri, 21 Apr 2023 22:57:12 +0000 https://emmett.website/?p=7480 Over the last 6 months, I have immersed myself in the study of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The martial art has long been an interest of mine – I’ve taken scattered lessons here and there over the years.

iu jitsu is a martial art that has gained significant popularity in recent years, with more and more people taking up the sport to improve their physical fitness and mental fortitude. While the physical aspects of jiu jitsu are well-known, there are several important lessons that leaders and managers can take from learning this martial art.

In this article, we will explore some of the key lessons that jiu jitsu can teach us about leadership and management, including long-term thinking and persistence, the ability to pivot on strategy, embracing failure, humility, focusing on fundamentals, and staying calm under pressure.

Long-Term Thinking and Persistence

Jiu jitsu is a sport that requires a long-term mindset and a persistent attitude. In jiu jitsu, there are no shortcuts to success. It takes years of consistent training, practice, and dedication to master the techniques and strategies necessary to succeed on the mat.

Leaders and managers can learn a great deal from this approach. To be successful in business, it is essential to adopt a long-term mindset and remain persistent in pursuing your goals. Short-term thinking and quick-fix solutions may yield immediate results, but they are rarely sustainable in the long run.

As a leader or manager, it is important to set realistic goals and work consistently towards achieving them. Whether it is a five-year plan or a ten-year strategy, a long-term mindset can help you stay focused and motivated, even when faced with challenges and setbacks.

Ability to Pivot on Strategy

One of the most important skills that jiu jitsu teaches is the ability to pivot on strategy. In jiu jitsu, a successful competitor must be able to adapt to the situation on the mat, adjusting their techniques and strategies to counter their opponent’s moves.

Leaders and managers can apply this same skill in their professional lives. In business, unexpected challenges and opportunities arise all the time, and a successful leader must be able to pivot on strategy to address these changes.

For example, if a company’s sales strategy is not yielding the desired results, a leader may need to pivot to a new marketing approach. Similarly, if a team is struggling to achieve their goals, a manager may need to pivot their management style to better support their employees.

Embracing Failure

In jiu jitsu, failure is an inevitable part of the learning process. Every successful jiu jitsu practitioner has experienced countless failures and setbacks along the way. But instead of seeing failure as a roadblock, jiu jitsu practitioners learn to embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Leaders and managers can learn a great deal from this mindset. In business, failure is an inevitable part of the process. Whether it is a failed product launch, a missed deadline, or a strategic misstep, setbacks are bound to happen.

But instead of viewing failure as a negative, leaders and managers can embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow. By analyzing what went wrong and identifying ways to improve, failure can become a valuable learning experience that helps a company or team become stronger and more successful in the long run.

Humility

One of the most important values in jiu jitsu is humility. In jiu jitsu, there is always someone who is better, stronger, or more skilled than you. This constant reminder keeps practitioners humble and focused on improving their own skills, rather than comparing themselves to others.

Leaders and managers can also benefit from practicing humility in their professional lives. By acknowledging that there is always room for improvement and being open to feedback and constructive criticism, leaders can create a culture of continuous learning and improvement within their organization.

Focusing on Fundamentals

Jiu jitsu is a complex martial art with a wide range of techniques and strategies. However, the most successful practitioners are those who have mastered the fundamentals of the sport. By focusing on

The Sundial Cannabis Suite https://emmett.website/?p=5101 Fri, 05 Jun 2020 17:23:38 +0000 http://iseemtobeaverb.com/emmett.website/?p=5101 Sundial is one of Canada’s largest cannabis producers. Their brands include Sundial, Top Leaf, Palmetto, Grasslands, BC Weed Co and more. I had a hand in building all of these brands, along with digital, print and product collateral for each.

My agency role included overseeing project management, liaising with multiple stakeholders to determine project and business requirements, and developing content strategy.

Additionally, I managed agency budget and built up a team of contractors for video, photo and other resources.

I also pushed to improve processes with outside providers like label printers, re-examining efficiencies and implementing more streamlined approaches.

Medical Cannabis Video Series https://emmett.website/?p=5335 Wed, 10 Jun 2020 03:54:25 +0000 http://emmett.website/?p=5335 For Sundial, I produced and edited a series of videos featuring Dr. Jamie Cox, who speaks on the benefits of of medical cannabis for various conditions.

The primary challenge was in extracting the human side of the stories – and eliminating (or curtailing) the scientific details and medical jargon.

We focused on poignant human examples from Dr. Cox’s practice that helped to illustrate the effectiveness of cannabis for treating PTSD, Neuropathic Pain, and the symptoms of cancer treatment.
